February 2013 Hip Kit… A special keepsake for our soccer coach…

Happy Saturday!

I hope you are all having a great weekend so far.  I know that my blog posts have been a bit sporadic lately.  Life around our house during the spring is always crazy.  As many of you know our teenage daughters play both club soccer and run track for their high school.  During this time of the year both of these sports overlap – which keeps us on the move as we watch and cheer them on at all of their games and meets.

This year I offered to make a scrapbook for our oldest daughter’s soccer coach.  Several of the girls from her team aren’t going to continue to play after this season ends.  He’s coached many of these girls for 5 or 6 years, so we thought it would be nice to give him a special keepsake from his team.  I had each one of the girls give me a soccer photo from when they first started playing… at 5 or 6 years old, along with a few more current photos.  They also wrote thank you letters, and wrote down one of their favorite memories from being on this team.

I took all of the photos and other memorabilia and used the products from our February Hip Kit along with a few other bits and pieces from my stash to create a layout for each girl.  I wanted to include all of the photos and letters, but I didn’t want the pages to be too busy.  So, I added a pocket or two on each page to hide the letters and extra photos.  After putting each page into the page protectors I cut slits where the pocket openings were so that extra goodies can be accessed without having to pull the page out of the sleeve.  I also added pull tabs to each of the extra photos and letters so they can be removed from the pockets.

Boy, it was a lot of work, but I am really happy with the way all of the layouts turned out – so I thought I would share them with you.  I think these pages are perfect examples of how you don’t need soccer themed paper and stickers to create great sports layouts.  Enjoy!!!

The dark brown Thickers from my stash were just too dark for this layout.  So, I sanded them with a nail file and painted them with School House Red Mister Huey Mist using a paint brush.  This was a really  simple fix and the font for all of the titles remained consistent throughout the entire book.

February 2013 Hip Kit… A whimsical layout by Kimberly Hutchison…

Happy Saturday!

Today I want to share a layout that I created with our February 2013 Hip Kit and a photo from my daughter’s Iphone.  The quality of the photo isn’t great – but it captured the moment and the love that Madeleine has for these two adorable kids that she babysits.

I absolutely love the background of my page!!!  Painting with mists to create your own background is a really popular trend right now.  I had never tried it before… but let me tell you that it is SOOOOO EASY!!!!

First…  I needed to determine the basic layout of my page.  So, I chose a few patterned papers from my kit and began layering them under my photo – without gluing anything down.  Next, using a pencil I lightly sketched a heart onto the kraft cardstock background and  I removed the photo and patterned papers and set them aside. Next, I painted over the sketched heart using the applicator from my Dewey and Schoolhouse Mister Huey Mist.  I also added a few mist splatters throughout the page.  After the mist was dry, I added the patterned paper and photo back onto my page and added some other details.Like You LOI cut the title for my page out of one of the 5x7 note card in the Glitz This & That Die Cut pack.  I loved the sentiment, but the card itself was too large for this project. Like You Detail 3There is always a story for every photo… and often times the story is long enough to take up a substantial amount of space on my page.  Therefore, I often include my journaling hidden on a tag tucked behind a photo or one of the layers on my page.  I usually add a tab, ribbon or a button to the end of the tag – so the tag can easily be pulled out and the journaling can be read. I added a chipboard arrow pointing towards the tag…  as a little message to let you know that there is something hidden on the tag.  :D Like You Detail 2
Like You Detail 4I stamped the “happy place” sentiment with the Dear Lizzy Lucky Charm Phrase roller stamp that was included in our February Embellishment Add-On Kit.  So cute!!!  The little heart was from our Project Life Add-On Kit.  All of the goodies in our PL Add-On Kits are perfect for both traditional and PL layouts.

Thanks for visiting today.  I hope my layout has inspired you to try painting with your mists.  You will be amazed at how easy it is to make your own custom background.  I can’t wait to try this again.  Have a scrappy day! xo – Kimberly -

January 2013 Hip Kit… A Project Life layout & more…

Happy Sunday!

I hope you have all had a wonderfully relaxing weekend.  We have been super busy around here.  Both Mackenzie & Madeleine competed in a track meet yesterday.  If you have ever been to a track meet – you know that they go on for hours…  (like 6 hours).  :D  It was a lot of fun.  This was Mackenzie’s 1st high school meet and Madeleine is a junior.  They ran on the same 4x400m relay team – which was so exciting.  Madeleine ran the 3rd leg and handed off to Mackenzie, and Mackenzie anchored the race.  She was ahead the entire time… until the last 100 meters the girl behind her caught up and almost passed her in the last 10 meters.  Mackenzie finished 1st by about a half stride.  This was the last event of the day, and the crowd cheered like crazy.   Bob posted the video on Youtube if any of you are interested to watch.
CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE VIDEO…  My favorite moment was when Madeleine ran up to Mackenzie and gave her a big hug at the finish line.  This is what life is about!

Okay… so enough about that.  Tonight I am going to share the last few projects that were created with our amazing January 2013 Hip Kit.  A great project life layout and a few awesome cards created by Melanie Blackburn and a layout that I made.  :D  I can’t even tell you how happy I am to have found some time to scrap again!!!  Big grin!!!

For those of you who are doing Project Life albums…  I want to share this fabulous PL layout that our talented Melanie Blackburn created using our January Hip Kit and our January  Project Life Add-On Kit.  I think you can see how easily the products included in our main Hip Kit can be incorporated into a PL format… and our PL Add-On Kit gives you a nice array of smaller embellishments and a great Elle’s Studio clear stamp set that can be used on  both PL pages and tradition scrapbook layouts.  All of the products in our kits are really versatile, and Melanie’s layout is an wonderful example of this.

Week-7-HipKitI love the little Elle’s Studio  Cutouts from our Embellishment Add-On Kit.  This one little sheet has lots of little elements that add such nice detail to Melanie’s pages.  The Midway Decorative Brads from our PL Add-On Kit has several different sized brads along with a few decorative tags.  These are the perfect size embellishment for such a small space.  They add a lot without taking up much space.  The Midway Alphabet Stickers are a great choice to add a pop of color and a bold description.  The Studio Calico Darling Dear Mini Alphas are great for adding more detailed captions. Week-8-Hip-KitMelanie used a combination of products from our January main Hip Kit and all of our different Add-On Kits to create these super cute cards.  I love all of the layers, texture and dimension that she added to each one.  Love!!!
Glad-Card-JanShe cut a banner notch out of the “Good Life” Stencil Card.  Then she put a chevron mask on top of the card and applied a modeling compound.  Then she removed the mask, and let the chevron pattern dry.  What a great technique to add texture to your  project.

Here is the most recent layout that I created with our January Hip Kit.  This page has several of my favorite products on it.  A scrap of the gold polka dot vellum (I saved every little scrap of this paper.)  haha… Woodgrain paper is another favorite.  I love the richness that it adds to my page.  I can’t seem to create a layout lately  without using mist in some way or another.  It helps give the eye a path to follow through the entire page.  Plus it keeps cardstock from looking so stark.Dad LOI used a Prima Chalk Ink Pad to color the white Thickers.  From my earlier experience, I knew that the ink wouldn’t set – and would continue to smear regardless of how long I let it dry.  Heat setting didn’t even work.  So, I placed the letters for my title onto a piece of plastic packaging, and applied the ink to each one.  I let it dry for 10 minutes, and then I sprayed them with aerosol hairspray to prevent smearing.  This is an old trick that we used in our art class to keep charcoal and pastel drawings from smearing.  It works like a charm for this too!
Dad Detail 2
Dad Detail 1I can’t make a page without adding at least a little bit of machine stitching.  I think this is one tool that I just could not do without.  :D
Dad Detail 3
I hope our projects have inspired you to want to create something wonderful with your January Hip Kit.  Tomorrow… I will be sharing projects created with our amazing February Hip Kit – so  you will definitely want to stop by and check them out.  Have a scrappy day! xo – Kimberly -

January 2013 Hip Kit… Sharing a great layout & masking technique…

5. March 2013 04:11 by Kimberly   //  Tags: , , , , , , ,   //   Comments
Happy Tuesday!

Today I have a fun layout and a great masking technique to share with you.  I used this technique  and the products in our amazing January 2013 Hip Kit to create this page.  It is always great when you have an new idea… and it actually works out the way you envision it.

Last week when I was at Michael’s I saw these plastic mesh sheets in the embroidery department. I think they are used when embroidering with yarn. I thought they would work perfectly as masks for misting. They are really inexpensive… only .65 each! They are durable so they can be used over and over again. They come in different sizes and shapes.   I picked up a large 10”x13” rectangle and two different sized circles.  There are different size meshes – I got those with the larger holes.

  besnap2013-03-04_12-35-47-PM    besnap2013-03-04_12-36-24-PM

For my layout, I used the larger circle.  I wanted to make sure that it layed flush against my paper… so I sprayed the back side with Elmer’s Spray Adhesive which gives a tacky type stick similar to a post it note or a cutting mat for a Cricut.  After spraying the mask, I placed it on a 12x12 piece of white cardstock.  I used the Mister Huey Dewey mist – and lightly misted the entire page.  I like that color a lot because it is soft and gives just enough color without overpowering the background.  (note:  a similar effect can be achieved using doilies for masks) This was the result using the plastic mesh circle…  You can see the detail of the masking technique better on the finished layout.  :D

besnap2013-03-04_12-38-50-PM
I used the misted cardstock as the background for my layout.  :D  I am drawn to white or light backgrounds for my layouts lately – because I like adding misting and splatters to them – and it really shows up well on the lighter backgrounds.  Plus – the other goodies pop right off the page.  Here is my finished page.

January 2013 Hip Kit… A Christmas page by Kimberly Hutchison…

22. February 2013 05:55 by Kimberly   //  Tags: , , , ,   //   Comments

Hi Everyone!

Today I have a layout that I created using a Christmas photo along with our fabulous January Hip Kit.  I know that many of you might not think that the products in our January kit would be a good fit for Christmas photos… but it is!!!  It is not so much about patterns and icons – as it is about colors and a feel.

Nana and GirlsI used a ruler and my craft knife to cut the aqua chevrons out of the Crate Paper Fourteen Sparks paper.  Then I machine stitched them to my background paper.  I cut them down a bit… so that they didn’t take over my page.  I really like the subtle texture they give to the foundation of my layout.
Nana LO Detail 3The gold polka dot vellum from our January Embellishment Add-On Kit is one of my favorite products from this month’s collection.  I love the way it looks when you layer if over other papers, and I love the shine that the metallic polka dots have without having a sparkle to them.  The gold worked well with my Christmas photo – because it gave my page a festive feel.
Nana LO Detail 5The aqua & white washi tape at the very top and bottom of my layout was from my stash.  I needed something with a strong repetitive pattern to give weight to the top of my page.  Having a handful of different colors and patterns of washi tape in your stash – comes in really handy.

I hope my page has inspired you to try to scrap a holiday themed photo using “non-holiday” related products in one of your Hip Kits.  If you do…  you can share your layout with us on by posting in on our Facebook page.  We would love to see what you create!!!  We will have more awesome projects created with our January Hip Kit to share with you this weekend… so make sure to check back.  Have a scrappy day!  xo – Kimberly -

January 2013 Hip Kit… A sweet layout by Kimberly Hutchison…

18. February 2013 08:53 by Kimberly   //  Tags: , , , ,   //   Comments

Hi Everyone!
I hope you all had a great weekend.  I spent yesterday scrapbooking… which was a nice treat for me.  Today, I have a fun layout to share with you that I created with our fabulous January 2013 Hip Kit.  I had some photos of my two youngest daughters and Mackenzie’s best friend, Megan at a Sounder’s soccer game.  I think this layout is a perfect example that you don’t need soccer themed products to work with soccer photos to make an amazing page.  Check it out…  (the photos of my layout were taken with my phone… so they aren’t quite as clear as they would be had I have taken them with my SLR – but this was a lot quicker) haha…

Sister LOAdding vellum to your projects is a really popular trend right now.  I love the Dear Lizzy 5th & Frolic gold polka dot vellum that was included in our January Embellishment Add-On Kit.  It adds a little pattern, and some shine and also gives a more subdued foundation for my photos.  It was super fun to work with.Sister LO Detail 2

Machine stitching is always a great way to add detail to your projects.  I hand cut a few hearts from the Fourteen – Be Mine paper.  Then I layered two of them and machine stitched down the middle.  I adhered the bottom heart to the paper and folded the top heart up a bit.  This is an inexpensive way to create a dimensional embellishment that will give texture to your layout.Sisters detail 1I scraped the edge of the striped border with the blade of my scissors to give it a rough edge.  Then I layered it over a strip of aqua paper and machine stitched to my layout.  Then I lifted the edges up a bit to give some extra dimension and weight to the left side of my page.
Sisters Detail 3I like the brightness that a white cardstock background gives my layouts.  However, sometimes it is a bit to stark… so this time I lightly misted the upper right and lower left corners with Dewy Mister Huey Mist.  Then I create some splatters to give some more distinct drops.  All in all I was really happy with the way it all came together.

Thanks so much for stopping by today.  I hope my page has inspired you to create a page or two of your own with one of your Hip Kits.  Tomorrow I will have another project to share with you… so make sure to check back.  Have a scrappy day!!!  xo – Kimberly -

January 2012 Hip Kit… 2 sweet valentine card by Kimberly Hutchison

5. February 2013 03:33 by Kimberly   //  Tags: , , , ,   //   Comments
Happy Tuesday!!!
I know you have all been patiently waiting for our January Hip Kit DT projects.  :D  Well, today I have 2 sweet valentine cards to share with you that I made with our January Kit.  I think that you will find that all of the wonderful goodies in this package – will make creating amazing projects a piece of cake.

I love the Life Stencil Cards by Fancy Pants.  Each card is like getting two embellishments in one.  You get the word itself, and a stencil card.  So, you can easily make two projects with that one embellishment.  Everyone received 3 assorted cards in their January Hip Kits.  One of my cards said “Love”, and I just knew I had to use the stencil part to make a card. :D
IMG_1622The stencil card itself was a little too large for my card, so I cut it down a bit.  I adhered a strip of the Dear Lizzy Foxy Fairview paper to the back of the card, and machine stitched around the perimeter.  This gave it a nice little detail.  I added a heart doily from my stash.  I think the doily added both texture and a dainty detail to my card.  Doilies are great to have on hand.  Next time you are at out, pick up a couple packages of doilies in a few different sizes.  Later on this month I will do a little tutorial showing some different ways to incorporate doilies into your projects.  IMG_1623
You all know how much I LOVE woodgrain papers & embellishments!  The Echo Park Kraft Wood paper gave my card a neutral background with a nice subtle pattern.  This worked well because the focal part of my card was so bright.  The Today’s Story – Hello paper has twelve 3”x4” cut apart journaling blocks and cards with little phrases.  I thought the “Love” block would make a really cute card.  The bright color really caught my eye, but other than the love script, it was kind of plain.
IMG_1629I added some corrugated Thickers. This gave my card texture and dimension. The little “so much” sticker from the 5th & Frolic Accent & Phrase Stickers finished the sentiment. I matted the pink card on aqua cardstock – which kept the aqua Thickers from looking out of place. Plus, an extra layer is always appealing.  I added some machine stitching to the “you” and “so much” stickers.  I still felt like it needed something else.  The Studio Calico Darling Dear Vellum Heart & Arrow Stickers were the perfect finishing touch.  I really like the “pop” of black.

I hope my cards have inspired you to create some valentines for your loved ones.  Thanks so much for stopping by today.  We will have another collection of amazing projects to share with you tomorrow – so don’t forget to come back. xo – Kimberly -

December 2012 Hip Kit… 2 fun projects by Kimberly Hutchison…

4. February 2013 10:53 by Kimberly   //  Tags: , , , ,   //   Comments

Hi Everyone!
It is Kimberly here with you today sharing a couple of fun projects that I created with our December 2012 Hip Kit.  There are so many amazing products in our December kit – as you unpack your kit, I think you will find all kinds of inspiration right at your fingertips.  I did! :D

Vellum and little glassine bags are a really popular trend right now.  On this layout I tucked a glassine bag behind one of the photos on my page.  I used this pocket to add a few extra pictures to my layout.  I also machine stitched an Amy Tangerine journaling card with a “pull here” tab to one of the extra photos.
IMG_1650
IMG_1658I added a little bit of “woodgrain” washi tape (from my stash) to my layout – because I thought it needed just a little bit of contrast.  Washi tape is one of those great products that goes an extremely long way.  A few different styles of washi tape are one of those must-haves.  :DIMG_1663When I was adding the title to my page – the pattern on the Amy Tangerine Thickers was just too subtle.  So, I painted them with aqua blue craft paint… but they ended sticking out like a sore thumb.  So, I decided that black alphabet would be the best choice.  I used the Midnight Black October Afternoon Sprinkler Mist (from our October 2012 Embellishment Add-On Kit) to color them.  Since the alphabet were already adhered to my page, I used a paint brush to apply the mist to them. I am really happy with the way they turned out.  :DIMG_1670
I made this cute Valentines card  using the Seen & Noted Phrase Cards from our Embellishment Add-On Kit.  By adding “Valentine” with the October Afternoon Mini Market Alphabet – I turned the generic “Hello There” pennant banner into a cute Valentine’s Day card.  The grey chevron background paper, was the reverse side of one of the pages from the pad of Phrase Cards.
IMG_1643Some machine stitching, a button and a little baker’s twine were perfect finishing touches for this sweet card.
IMG_1644
I hope my projects have inspired you to try something new – like adding a bag or a pocket to one of your layouts or cards.  it is great way to store something special (journaling, extra photos or a gift card).  Thanks so much for stopping by today.  Make sure to visit again tomorrow to see a new collection of projects created with our January 2012 Hip Kit. – xo – Kimberly
