| What a day! Madeleine, my 14 year old daughter had surgery today on her broken ankle. She was so very brave. She didn't even flinch when they put in the IV. She even tolerated me taking few photos to document her experience. Her nerves started to get the best of her as her doctor and the anesthesiologist came in to talk to us. Just before they wheeled her off to the operating room they put something in her IV to relax her. I kissed her, gave her a hug and told her that I loved her. Then the nurse and anesthesiologist wheeled her down the hallway and out of our site. This was when my nerves got the best of me. 10 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour, an hours and 15 minutes - finally her surgeon came out to talk to us. He said the surgery went well and that she was in recovery. I felt somewhat relieved - but I still hadn't seen her yet - as she was still in recovery coming out of the anesthesia. Another 10 minutes passed - then 30 minutes, then 40 minutes and we were called back - She was awake!!! We went through the locked door, walked down the hallway and into the recovery unit where we found our brave girl sitting up in her bed waiting to see us. I hugged her and kissed her and told her that I loved her. I was so relieved to see her and know that she was okay. Within about an hour we were on our way home. Our evening at home - the pain has been more difficult to get under control. She is sleeping soundly right now. I hope it lasts for awhile - until her next dose of pain meds are due. I hate to see her in pain. She is such a brave girl - and I love her so very much. This was a day in my life - Tuesday, April 27th 2010. |
